John Murphy, was fifteen years old when he joined the overland expedition from Brisbane to Port Essington, Northern Territory, led by Ludwig Leichhardt. The expedition left its last outpost, Thomas Bell's Jimbour station, on 1 Oct. 1844 and reached the military settlement of Victoria, Port Essington, 17 Dec. 1845.
